Hi there,

I think my state (Mass) police changed to a Digital Trunking System. I can’t figure out what it’s exactly called, might it be APCO-25 or Project 25. That’s what’s listed in the “Type” column on RadioReference, where other systems say Motorola or EDACS. (I’m looking for the Commonwealth of Mass (Project 25) System. It’s listed here:

http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?stid=25&tab=trs

Does anyone know if I can program my BC 245XLT for this? and if not, anyone here know if I can do this on a BC346XT?

Thanks much.

Hi Chuck,

Thanks very much.. I have loved my 245’s and hated my 346 (too complicated!!! LOL) – HOWEVER – I really miss my state police and it looks like they are on a digital system now..

Can you or anybody recommend me a good Digital Trunking Scanner?

Thanks again for checking.. I was just looking at the box for my 346 and it doesn’t say analog or digital on it!!! (at least not that I could find!)

the BC346XT is also analog only, so it won't either.

I’m right there with you... I lost my “ambulances” some years ago when they did a new system and turned off the repeater, that was a big bummer.. and now I’ve lost my state police, highway stuff etc.. I guess another new scanner.. but I really struggled with the 346, which I only got because the speaker in my 245 went.. but I’ve since gotten a “backup” 245 – only to not get my state police anymore.. just local cities and towns..

Well – if anyone has a good suggestion for a “not too complicated” digital scanner, please shout it out.

Thanks much - Maggie

Thanks very much Jim. Can you use FreeScan or some other software with it? I just downloaded that the other day after majorly messing up my 346 – and it looked pretty cool – but at this point it’s not worth my time for that scanner.. but if the new ones are just as complex, I might really benefit from it – now that I have actually seen it – and “almost” used it!
Thanks for your thoughts.. I really will just have one or two trunked systems and some conventional ones.. not a ton of stuff.

Hi there,

I guess as long as something works – now that this stuff has gotten way too hard to just hand program! Hopefully the new scanners connect via USB!

I believe I saw that FreeScan does work with it although I've been using
UASD from Uniden.

Thanks very much Jim. Can you use FreeScan or some other software with it?
I just downloaded that the other day after majorly messing up my 346 – and
it looked pretty cool – but at this point it’s not worth my time for that
scanner.. but if the new ones are just as complex, I might really benefit
from it – now that I have actually seen it – and “almost” used it!
Thanks for your thoughts.. I really will just have one or two trunked
systems and some conventional ones.. not a ton of stuff.

It may be a combination of both analog and digital.
See http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=736
Springfield, Missouri has (or had?) the same system
and they only used digital for situations that called for

You'll have to move up to at least the 396XT but you might want to check and make sure state hasn't also gone to scrambled/encrypted. Local radio group should be able to tell you or a quick chat on Radio Reference site. As far as programing goes FreeScan is available for free and simplifies that challenge and with an account from RadioReference you can just download and upload whatever you want. When it comes to using the radio keyboard I usually us it only for changes on the go and close call or search. Programing is just too time consuming when FreeScan can do it in minutes and the price is right.

Okay – thanks very much.. I’ll do a search of the Radio Reference site to make sure it’s not encrypted etc.. Yeah – I was great with the old scanners, and just barely survived with the 346 – but couldn’t just punch in a number to “hold” or immediately get to one channel if I wanted, so I was trying to do that recently with some advice from the 346 group, but i really screwed it up, so I downloaded the software – luckily had an old PC with a serial port and actually just started looking at it – but that’s when I realized I wasn’t getting all my stuff anymore – and now I see it’s moved.. so at this point – I really want everything – even if I have more than one scanner.. I have a few now – but I really want my state police back.. and yes, the price is definitely right for the Radio Reference stuff..

Thanks so very much.. I’ll count that as two votes for the 396..

Well – my husband says I should get the newer model, and I shouldn’t buy used.. So I guess I will look seriously at the 436. I will have to first be SURE that my state police system isn’t encrypted.. if it is someone’s managing to play it for me.. So HP-1 – must be something like Home Patrol – but I don’t know what that is yet. that’s my problem with getting the fancier scanner – I’ll never use most of the functionality.. However – the 396 is a pretty old model..

I hope on my own scanner I can choose what talk groups I want – so that I can just get the state police in my area – if I want.. or all of it.

Anyway – you guys are the best.. I would be lost without you.. Thank you!

You might want to look at a BCD436HP. That comes after the HP1 and the 396xlt. The 436 HP is digital and can program by zip code. The price is close to the 396, but for a better scanner. Lookit:

You guys have all be AWESOME to me – and so fast to respond etc.. I did get the Radio Scanner Pro app – Gordon – it’s REALLY GREAT – but – I do want a scanner also – now the question is what to get. I really don’t want to spend a ton of money – I recently stupidly bought a used “backup” 245, since I had so much trouble getting what I wanted from the 346 – of course that’s because I never tried the software until last weekend – at which time I realized that the majority of the stuff I want has now been moved to digital. Don – I could list some older scanner models myself – and I still have them all – but not in front of me! I think I had a 10 channel and maybe a 30 and then the 245 Trunk Tracker – which eventually blew the speaker, but we took it out on boats in Lake George and in the car and it got bounced around.. so we bought a busted one and took the speaker out- but then I got the 346 which at this point – while I, like someone else mentioned, will definitely have and want more than one scanner – sometimes I like to just leave one on my town or something and scan different things on another.

So – now the big problem – what to get. I guess I have to look up what HP-1 features are – unless you can give me a quick explanation. Since my state “just” changed, I can’t imagine needing more than the APCO-25 for a long time.. However – I see that the 396 came out back in 05.. and obviously the 436 is brand new.. However, I honestly probably don’t need more than what the 396 can do for me. I haven’t checked to see if my state police system is encrypted – I guess I better do that – and I supposed I can’t assume it’s not if it’s on that Radio Scanner program – as the person broadcasting that could be decrypting it..

Don – I see you had some issues w/your 396.. that really stinks.. I’m a little bit thinking of getting a used one – although that’s not my style – well, I did for parts and “backup” – but generally I don’t do that... but tax time is coming and we’re going to owe a lot of money.. UGH..

Another option is to listen to your police via online services. There
are many people who have already paid for the equipment to listen to
police and other agencies and then broadcast it onto the Internet.

Reference site. As far as programing goes FreeScan is available for
free and simplifies that challenge and with an account from
RadioReference you can just download and upload whatever you want.
When it comes to using the radio keyboard I usually us it only for
changes on the go and close call or search. Programing is just too
time consuming when FreeScan can do it in minutes and the price is right.

Hi there,
I think my state (Mass) police changed to a Digital Trunking System. I
can’t figure out what it’s exactly called, might it be APCO-25 or
Project 25. That’s what’s listed in the “Type” column on
RadioReference, where other systems say Motorola or EDACS. (I’m
looking for the Commonwealth of Mass (Project 25) System. It’s listed
http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?stid=25&tab=trs
Does anyone know if I can program my BC 245XLT for this? and if not,
anyone here know if I can do this on a BC346XT?
Thanks much.

Another option is to listen to your police via online services. There are many people who have already paid for the equipment to listen to police and other agencies and then broadcast it onto the Internet.

Online scanners have their uses, but you’re limited to whatever they’re scanning.
You can’t “lock” a fireground channel for example unless the scanner operator does (if it’s not just an unattended connection to a computer).
we had the bean counters looking at that, but managed to convince them they needed REAL scanners that we controlled.
Some areas also go offline, when either the scanner or the computer is not in use,

The new scanners use a dedicated port via USB cable to program. I use freescan and can get all of ours reprogrammed very quickly when changes are made.
Encryption sucks though, as does systems like Open Sky, which no scanner gets.
Good Luck!

Thanks a lot Kent.. I’ll hope it’s not encrypted.. I mean they all have laptops in their cars anyway – and they all know darn well we are listening – so just let us listen! Meantime, funny – in Mass – NONE of the state police (and few if any cities/towns) have Dash Cams in the cruisers.. they do not want anyone to see what’s really going on!!!

I like to be able to take my scanner in the car – on a trip or mostly during snowstorms.. to hear the crashes and stuff.. heck, I enjoyed listening to the DOT guys doing plowing! Fascinating sometimes!!!!

If you can hear your town on computer through one of the apps it isn't encrypyed, but what comes through an app is what some good guy kindly mounted from his own equipment to share with us. Download a scanner app and see if you want to take that big step up to a digital scanner.

Thanks Don, I will definitely check out that model also.. I hate when I have to get something new because I don’t want to spend a million hours stressing over what to buy! so if you guys are having luck with these two, I will check them out – and for sure I first have to find out if my state police are encrypted. I did not see that on the RR pages where they described the new system, but I’ll make sure I contact someone who is receiving it..

Yes, I have “heard” that I could listen to an app on my phone that is really some VERY nice guy like you doing all the leg work and then broadcasting it somehow for me! I see the scanner radio pro that one of you mentioned, I will check it out for sure..

My town is an old low band – so I can get that on any of the other scanners I already have – but I really want the state police.. I also really want a big antenna so I can hear the ambulance transmissions, but I can’t see mounting one on my house. I bought several bigger indoor ones, but no luck.. I needed that repeater and it actually got programmed off by accident, but that was probably almost 10 years ago, and I’m sure they’re just as happy now!

Thanks a million guys – you are really saving me from hours and hours of research..

- Maggie

Scanner apps are fine until the s- hits the fan, then they go dark for officers' safety. That would be when you really want to follow the action.

Thanks much.

One other note about scanner apps. They depend on the kindness of someone else to rebroadcast transmissions and if you're interested in military and a few other federal systems it is illegal for them to be re-broadcasted. You can listen freely on the radio but rebroadcasting is illegal and has been for years. Also there are some older radios like the 245xlt which say they are digital. They support the older digital systems but not APCO or APCO25 so make sure you check that it covers the systems you want to listen to before you go for that great deal. I still use my 245XLT for monitoring the analog fire dispatch simulcasts so when my 396 is humping on another fire call I can hear the dispatches for the other stations and choose what tactical nets I want to listen to. Just some food for thought before you spend money. Good luck and happy scanning.

Scanner apps are fine until the s- hits the fan, then they go dark for officers' safety. That would be when you really want to follow the action.

If you have a Smartphone there is an App called Scanner Radio Pro which allows you to listen via your phone.

Another option is to listen to your police via online services. There are many people who have already paid for the equipment to listen to police and other agencies and then broadcast it onto the Internet.

This is the best – and I can get it on my PC too.. however I still want a scanner I can have my own control over – but thank you for this. Now I just have to figure out which scanner to get. Definitely a handheld.. after that – I don’t know what to do.. I really do not have a ton of money. I have a pile of scanners, but not a ton of $$!!!

Maggie, neither the BC245XLT or the BC346XT will decode digital transmissions. To receive digital you will need a BCD396XT handheld, BCD996XT base/mobile, Home Patrol 1, or their just becoming available BCD436HP handheld or BCD546HP base mobile, or a scanner from another manufacturer which is capable of decoding digital transmissions.

In general a Uniden scanner capable of decoding digital transmissions will have a D in the model number. Like the five mentioned above or their discontinued models BC250D, BC296D, handhelds or BC785D, BC796D, base/mobiles

Hi Fred – thanks for this info.. I would be looking for a handheld – so unless that Home Patrol 1 would work for me, I guess I’d be looking at the 396.. (Of course I haven’t looked at the prices yet!)

Any pros/cons thoughts are appreciated – you guys have all been great to me tonight! Thank you again..

Several suggested the Home Patrol which is an excellent unit. There is a guy who runs a web site who is from or near Boston. I’m not sure it is Scan Massachusetts or Scan New England. He might be able to help you with a choice.

Most all of the newer menu driven scanners get more complicated to use. Most of the digital scanners are around $500 except the new BCD546HP which is $599.

Hey Jack – can you tell me what the 436 will have better than the 396? I am looking at a comparison page that says it’s the 396 plus HP-1 features..

I so appreciate all the help you guys are giving me. I definitely need my own scanner and that was what I wanted most (and was too dumb to figure out how to do on the 346) – to be able to push a button and be on one freq – like my town – a non-trunked system.. In the end, had I used the software I would have been okay – so clearly I’m going to have to do that on my new scanner – I just don’t know what to get..

Thanks again.. (and Jack I see your phone number.. you never know I might call you some time – if I really get stuck!)

I’ve been a scanner “medium level” person for over 20 years – so you have some time on me for sure.. and knowledge as well.. I’m just a computer geek!

If you have a ham radio outlet store near you, they have a not too bad price on the 396xt;

Still, I'd look toward the 436hp since it's apco25 phase 1 and phase 2 capable. The 396 only is phase 1 capable;

You'll
have to move up to at least the 396XT but you might want to check and make sure
state hasn't also gone to scrambled/encrypted. Local radio group should be able
to tell you or a quick chat on Radio Reference site. As far as programing goes
FreeScan is available for free and simplifies that challenge and with an account
from RadioReference you can just download and upload whatever you want. When it
comes to using the radio keyboard I usually us it only for changes on the go and
close call or search. Programing is just too time consuming when FreeScan can do
it in minutes and the price is right.

Commonwealth of Mass (Project 25) System. It’s listed

anyone know if I can program my BC 245XLT for this? and if not, anyone here know
if I can do this on a BC346XT?
