Well, there were a couple of non-spam messages in December. :-)

And there was a single message on April 5, 2011. Spam. !?! Guess that's
too much for this guy. Me? I use a spam filter and never noticed it until
I went looking.

How much is too much?

Regards, Dave S

Problem is you AVG antivirus, it false flags a lot. Try something good and
free like, AVAST. After it works for a while and proves to be better and
less of a system resource hog then the big name ones, you may want to buy
it. But hey, free is really good also. This isn't spam, just a pointer.
Spam is that stuff that when my big brother put it in my school lunch to
many times I would ask for peanut butter and jelly.

By the way, I'm still using and playing with my 245XLT, I use it to monitor
the FD dispatch channel without interruption. I also recently bought 386XT.
Love it, but one hell of a learning curve, mostly using the Freescan
software right now as even with the "easier to read manual" I still keep
putting it in modes I can't get it out of like system search. Lot to
remember as it can do so much. My wife said right after I told her the
price, Well that should keep you busy for a while (or was that implied it
better keep you busy). Funny thing is I'm not allowed to mention the price
of the granddaughter's new crib we paid for. Oh well, nice to see some are
still hanging around this group.

Now you can flame me if you want.

I always liked the 245XLT, but the ground is shifting away from it. Almost
everything I want to listen to is digital these days here (Sydney), so I
have a 396. About all that's left non-digital that I listen to is air
frequencies.

Unfortunately, the police went to digital but then to encryption.
Fortunately, no one else has encrypted.

True, many police in the U.S. dispatch digital now but if it needs to be
encrypted or at least "protected by law" they break out the cell phone or
input on the mobile computer. I have heard them go encrypted (including the
military) and then dump it for general conversations. Some areas do go
encrypted but when things go in the dumpster they have to keep going back to
something everyone can talk to each other on and that is proving to be when
mistakes are made about what should be open or not. I think in the future
digital radios and cell phones will meet in the middle but I could be all
wet. Wouldn't be the first time.

I know a couple of police dispatchers in Sydney, and the consensus is that
the encryption is actually working OK, despite all the misgivings there were
over reliability of connection. Same appears true of the digital itself,
which seems to be working OK and not degrading to nothing as much as was
feared.

By the way, I'm still using and playing with my 245XLT, I use it to monitor

Yup, the police in my city use cellphones, and anybody can tell you they work quite well for keeping private. Our EDACS system has shifted 3 out of 13 frequencies to digital and has been under training and testing.

Except the P25 Homeland security mandating it, there is no need to add millions of dollars of more equipment and annual software and system support costs to our broke city's budget. Digital radio has proved to be very problematic in many cities who use it, including contributing to the unecessary deaths of two firefighters who lost digital communication because it works that way when all conditions aren't *perfect*.

I still use my 245 at home and my 246t while away. They have been great radios and I don't look forward to retiring them because of a motorola P25 monopoly. If all the emergency folks had a way to trunk their cellphones, they'd have everything and we would never scan them. Also not scannable is CAD that all patrol cars here use for image information, such as suspect photos and documents. At least, I don't know how to scan it. I know there are video scanners, but I'm not going there. I doubt they can capture CAD data.

Hey Duff,
Since the 245 xlt isn't listed for the Freescan software, how are you able
to use it? And since you are using it, does it seem to be easy to use? I
have a 245 that I might try it on.

Thanks,

Don't know about Duff, but I don't remember ever using PC software to
program the 245. It was just as easy to key things in directly on the 245.

Not the same for my 396, though. It's a pain to program without the PC.

I used the program Senss and some others wrote. <http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/AHekTayYx68UZmogsVRhcLEDZBNDhBTTRzbFW1gPqDRnf4T5MK3k8PfJ5U-8kdAqGZSeFk66GXDYKXjuLS_lvCRbqfMYrTY/BC-245%20XLT%20Control%20Software/BC245INT-243.zip> BC245INT-243.zip is located in the files area of this news group. BC245INT was easy to use. It also had <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BC245XLT/files/BC245XLT%20Remote%20Listen%20Beta5/> BC245XLT Remote Listen Beta5 which allowed you to stream the 245 over the internet and remote control it. One warning though, you must use the install version first to install it which includes a VB file mscomm32.ocx file that the install registers on your computer. Then you can install the second newer version which only included the updated files. It was all written in MS, VB6. I did however have to buy an USB to serial adapter to plug the radio into my new Win7 machine. I still also have the source code for the install version and update. There is a lot of good info still in the files section of this group including the pinout for the radio. I don’t' know of anyone that has replacement serial cords for the radio, that is one of the top questions asked on http://www.radioreference.com for folks that still have the radio.

Don't know about Duff, but I don't remember ever using PC software to
program the 245. It was just as easy to key things in directly on the 245.

Not the same for my 396, though. It's a pain to program without the PC.

Hey Duff,
Since the 245 xlt isn't listed for the Freescan software, how are you able
to use it? And since you are using it, does it seem to be easy to use? I
have a 245 that I might try it on.
Thanks,
Mike

In a message dated 4/11/2011 5:55:32 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time,
I always liked the 245XLT, but the ground is shifting away from it. Almost
everything I want to listen to is digital these days here (Sydney), so I
have a 396. About all that's left non-digital that I listen to is air
frequencies.
Unfortunately, the police went to digital but then to encryption.
Fortunately, no one else has encrypted.

Problem is you AVG antivirus, it false flags a lot. Try something good
and
free like, AVAST. After it works for a while and proves to be better and
less of a system resource hog then the big name ones, you may want to
buy
it. But hey, free is really good also. This isn't spam, just a pointer.
Spam is that stuff that when my big brother put it in my school lunch to
many times I would ask for peanut butter and jelly.
By the way, I'm still using and playing with my 245XLT, I use it to
monitor
the FD dispatch channel without interruption. I also recently bought
386XT.
Love it, but one hell of a learning curve, mostly using the Freescan
software right now as even with the "easier to read manual" I still keep
putting it in modes I can't get it out of like system search. Lot to
remember as it can do so much. My wife said right after I told her the
price, Well that should keep you busy for a while (or was that implied
it
better keep you busy). Funny thing is I'm not allowed to mention the
price
of the granddaughter's new crib we paid for. Oh well, nice to see some
are
still hanging around this group.
Now you can flame me if you want.

Please be careful what you forward. That site was infected. My AVG
antivirus
blocked the attack.
